Direct Energy Marketing Limited Increases MAP II Holdings

The Balancing Pool announces the purchase by Direct Energy Marketing Limited (Direct Energy) of a 100 MW Sheerness Energy Strip Contract from El Paso Merchant Energy L.P. . This is in addition to Direct Energy's recent purchase of a 100 MW Genesee Energy Strip Contract in the third phase of the MAP II sale process completed on April 1, 2003.
Following this transaction, the current holdings of MAP II capacity is summarized on the following Table.

With the results to date of the MAP II sales process, eleven different market participants now control the Sheerness and Genesee capacity and three of the four Clover Bar Unit Contracts. The MAP II process has also been successful in attracting seven new entrants to the Alberta power market.
